NEW DELHI — India’s economic momentum remains highly resilient, recording a robust 7.8% real GDP growth in the first quarter (April–June) of the fiscal year. This expansion sets a solid foundation for the country's trajectory, with its total nominal GDP firmly projected to reach approximately $4.15 trillion by the end of 2026.
Data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) highlights that despite global macroeconomic headwinds, India’s domestic demand and structural reforms continue to shield its economy from external shocks.
Manufacturing Blazes the Trail
The standout performer of the quarter was the manufacturing sector, which clocked a phenomenal 9.2% growth year-over-year. This surge reflects the compounding success of supply-side incentives, including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, alongside aggressive infrastructure spending by the government.
Concurrently, nominal growth scaled up by 10.3%, driving India’s nominal per capita GDP toward $2,813. This steady climb in individual income levels is expected to further trigger consumer spending across mid-to-high tier retail sectors in the coming quarters.
Global Watchdogs Signal Stability
Independent international bodies have quickly validated these metrics. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and global ratings firms like S&P Global have sustained India’s stable outlook, citing healthy Gross Value Added (GVA) indicators and a booming services ecosystem.
While the 7.8% sprint marks a slight deceleration from the preceding quarter, economic analysts emphasize that it remains the fastest growth rate among major global economies. As private capital expenditure begins to mirror government spending, India appears well-positioned to maintain its hyper-growth narrative through the rest of the fiscal cycle
